In China, most people are willing to do anything to make their skin as light as possible, and women even more so. This obsession with fair skin isn't just in China.
In these countries, light skin is associated with wealth, while dark skin is associated with poverty. Ironically, the sun has very little to do with skin color in these countries, as rich and poor alike tend to keep their skin covered as much as possible.
Believe me, the cosmetics industry in China is booming. Interestingly, roughly 19.5 billion of this money comes from online sales.
Skin whitening creams and waters
Virtually every skin care product imaginable will have “skin whitening” on the label. Go to any of the big shopping malls and you're guaranteed to find several stores offering a wide variety of different beauty treatments, and even more stores that sell nothing but cosmetics.
As you can imagine, countless different Chinese home remedies for skin care are very popular.
Turmeric face masks
Turmeric face masks are popular in both urban and rural parts of the country. The only real difference is that city dweller tend to use commercially available masks, while those who live in the countryside almost always make their masks using dried turmeric powder mixed with water or fresh turmeric ground into a paste.
Turmeric is an excellent exfoliator and when added to a paste with some natural honey and some yogurt, it also becomes a great skin moisturizer. It gives you glowing skin and is also very effective in removing dark circles under the eyes. It is also commonly used to treat acne; rosacea and some types of eczema.
Pearl powder
Pearl powder is a mixture of powdered oyster shells, honey, and egg yolk. The mixture is then used in the same way you would use any regular face mask. It is known to improve skin and reduce inflammation. It is also often used to treat skin irritations. If you can't find pearl powder in your area, you can order ready-to-use masks online or you can simply make your own by grinding up some oyster shells.
Fresh mint paste
The freshly made mint paste is used as an instant skin brightener. I'm not sure if you can buy this paste online or in brick-and-mortar stores. Don't worry if you can't find any for sale because they are very easy to make.
